Sophia Akuffo approved by parliament as new CJ

Parliament has by consensus on Monday, June 19, 2017 approved the nomination of Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo as the new Chief Justice on Monday, June 19, 2017.

Her appointment was sealed following the approval by the plenary session today.

Justice Sophia Akuffo appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday for a four-hour vetting session.

Although parliament does not sit on Mondays, today’s session was agreed upon to enable MPs consider the nomination of the Chief Justice quickly.

Justice Akuffo, who has been at the apex court for over two decades, will take over from her ladyship Georgina Theodora Wood, who retired on June 8, 2017, after 10 years as Chief Justice and 47 years in public service.
